Wallpaper Calculator — Plan Your Wall Covering Project
Our wallpaper calculator helps you figure out exactly how many rolls you need for any room, taking into account wall height, doors, windows, pattern repeat, and waste allowance. The tool prevents the common frustration of buying too few rolls mid-project or wasting money on excess material.
How the Wallpaper Calculation Works
Basic method: the calculator multiplies the room perimeter by the ceiling height to get the total wall area, then subtracts door and window openings. It divides the net wall area by the coverage of a single roll, adjusted for pattern repeat and waste. The result is rounded up to whole rolls since partial rolls aren't sold.
Standard roll sizes: the most common wallpaper roll is 21 in (53 cm) wide and 33 ft (10 m) long, covering roughly 57 sq ft (5.3 m²) of wall. Premium and European wallpapers often come in wider rolls — 28 in (70 cm) or 42 in (106 cm) — which reduce the number of seams. Roll length varies from 33 to 82 ft (10–25 m) depending on the manufacturer.
Understanding Pattern Repeat
What is pattern repeat: pattern repeat (also called "rapport") is the vertical distance before the design repeats on the wallpaper. When hanging patterned wallpaper, you must align the design across adjacent strips, which uses extra material. The larger the repeat, the more rolls you need.
Calculating with repeat: the repeat height is added to the ceiling height for each strip. For example, with a 9 ft ceiling and a 13 in (32 cm) repeat, each strip must be cut at 9 ft + 13 in ≈ 10 ft 1 in. From a 33 ft roll, you only get 3 full strips instead of 3.7 — a significant difference in total roll count.
Wallpaper Types and Calculation Notes
Paper wallpaper: the most budget-friendly option. Standard width is 21 in (53 cm) with a 33 ft (10 m) length. Easy to hang but less forgiving of mistakes. Pattern repeats are usually small (6–10 in), so waste from matching is minimal. Ideal for bedrooms and low-traffic areas.
Vinyl wallpaper: tough and practical, available in widths from 21 to 42 in (53–106 cm). Roll lengths can be 33, 49, or 82 ft (10, 15, or 25 m). Complex patterns may have repeats up to 25 in (64 cm), requiring careful calculation. Best for kitchens, bathrooms, and hallways thanks to moisture resistance.
Non-woven (fleece) wallpaper: a popular premium choice. Often comes in wide 42 in (106 cm) rolls, reducing the number of seams. The paste goes on the wall, not the paper, which makes hanging faster. Pattern repeats can be large in designer collections, so verify before purchasing.
Textile and specialty wallpapers: high-end materials with non-standard dimensions, typically 28–36 in (70–90 cm) wide and 16–66 ft (5–20 m) long. Due to the high price per roll, precise calculation is especially important. Professional installation is recommended.
Room-Specific Considerations
Living spaces: bedrooms and living rooms typically have 8–10 ft ceilings and standard proportions. Usually 1–2 doors, 1–3 windows. Even if furniture covers part of a wall, it's best to wallpaper behind it so you can rearrange later without bare spots.
Kitchens and bathrooms: compact, high-humidity rooms that need moisture-rated wallpaper. Irregular shapes, pipes, and fixtures make calculation trickier. Subtract the backsplash zone in kitchens where wallpaper won't be applied.
Hallways and entryways: narrow spaces with multiple doors and possibly no windows. Ceiling height is sometimes lower than standard. Account for all architectural features and potential angled cuts in tight corners.
Waste Allowance and Buffer
Sources of waste: material is lost to trimming around outlets and switches, compensating for uneven corners, possible manufacturing defects, and installation errors. Complex room layouts with many niches and offsets generate even more waste.
How much buffer: the standard buffer is 10% above the calculated quantity. Increase to 15–20% for intricate patterns or irregularly shaped rooms. First-time DIY installers should consider extra buffer for learning-curve mistakes.
Future repairs: save leftover material to patch damaged sections years later. This is especially important in kids\' rooms and high-traffic areas where scuffs and tears are common.
Saving Money on Wallpaper
Optimize your purchase: an accurate calculation saves 15–25% compared to guessing. This matters most with premium wallpaper where each roll costs $50–$200+. Include wallpaper estimation early in your renovation budget planning.
Batch consistency: all rolls must come from the same production batch to avoid color and texture variations. If you buy in stages, you risk the batch being discontinued. Purchase everything at once with a small buffer.
Seasonal sales: planning your renovation around holiday sales and clearance events can cut costs significantly. An accurate roll count lets you buy the right amount during a sale without second-guessing.
Tools and Materials
Measuring tools: a quality tape measure at least 16 ft (5 m) long is essential. A laser distance meter speeds up the process and improves accuracy. Use a level to check wall straightness and corner angles.
Wallpaper paste: consumption depends on wallpaper type and application method. Paper wallpaper needs about 5–7 oz of dry paste per roll; vinyl requires 7–9 oz. Non-woven wallpaper paste goes directly on the wall at roughly 5–7 fl oz per 10 sq ft. Always buy extra.
Supplies checklist: beyond wallpaper and paste, you need primer/sizing for the walls, a sharp utility knife, a smoothing brush or plastic smoother, a seam roller, sponges for wiping excess paste, and a plumb line or laser level for the first strip.
Modern Trends
Accent walls: wallpapering a single statement wall instead of the entire room is a popular trend that saves money on expensive patterns. Calculate just that wall's area separately for an accurate count.
Peel-and-stick: removable wallpaper is a game-changer for renters and anyone who likes to change décor frequently. Sold in smaller rolls, it requires the same careful calculation to avoid waste.
Eco-friendly options: wallpapers made from recycled paper, grasscloth, linen, and bamboo are gaining popularity. These often have non-standard dimensions, so double-check roll width and length before calculating.
Use our wallpaper calculator to determine the exact number of rolls for your project. The tool factors in room geometry, pattern repeat, and waste so you can confidently purchase the right amount — no extra trips to the store, no leftover boxes gathering dust.
