BMI Calculator — How to Calculate Body Mass Index
Body Mass Index (BMI) is the world's most widely used method for assessing whether weight is appropriate for height. It is used by the WHO, national health agencies, GPs, dietitians and nutritionists as a baseline screening tool. The formula is straightforward: BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height² (m). The result is evaluated against the international WHO classification, which divides all values into 8 categories — from severe underweight to morbid obesity class III.
How to use the BMI calculator

Healthy weight for different heights — reference table
At 5'0" (152 cm): healthy weight 43–57 kg. At 5'4" (163 cm): 49–66 kg. At 5'7" (170 cm): 53–72 kg. At 5'10" (178 cm): 59–79 kg. At 6'0" (183 cm): 62–83 kg. At 6'2" (188 cm): 65–88 kg. These ranges correspond to BMI 18.5–24.9. If your weight falls outside these ranges, it may be worth discussing with your GP — though it doesn't necessarily indicate a health problem.
BMI and health risks
Research consistently links BMI above 25 with increased risk of hypertension, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, joint problems and certain cancers. BMI below 18.5 is associated with anaemia, osteoporosis, hormonal disruption and impaired immunity. That said, BMI is one of many health indicators and cannot replace a full medical assessment.
Body frame type and the weight-to-height ratio
BMI does not account for body frame type. There are three constitutional types: ectomorph (slight, narrow frame), mesomorph (medium build) and endomorph (broad, heavier frame). Two people of the same height and BMI may have very different body fat percentages depending on their frame and muscle mass. This is why waist circumference and body composition data provide a fuller picture than BMI alone.
Metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes risk
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions — elevated BMI, excess abdominal fat, high blood pressure and abnormal blood sugar or lipid levels — that significantly raises the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart attack and stroke. According to the WHO, diabetes risk begins to rise at BMI 25 and increases sharply above 30. Even a 5–7% reduction in body weight substantially lowers the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. If your BMI exceeds 25, consider having your fasting blood glucose checked.
BMI and age: what changes after 40 and 60
Body composition shifts with age: muscle mass decreases while fat percentage rises even when weight stays stable. For this reason, some clinicians consider a slightly higher BMI — up to 27 — acceptable for people over 65. Excessive weight loss in older adults can be as dangerous as obesity due to the risk of sarcopenia (muscle loss) and frailty.
