What the page counts and what it gives you

Label text

A label has four lines, and two of them are optional. The first line is the type caption: “FREEZER”, “HOMEMADE”, “BOX”, “PRODUCT” or “PARCEL”. The second is what you typed in the “What goes on the label” field. Then comes the date, if you entered one, and the extra line, if you need it. An empty date is not printed: a label that says “Frozen:” followed by a blank is worse than a label with no date.

Layout on the sheet

The sheet is A4, 210 × 297 mm, with 5 mm margins on every side. That leaves 200 × 287 mm for labels. The page divides this area by the label width and height and rounds down both ways: a label that does not fit whole is not counted – you would have to cut it off anyway. So 70 × 37 mm gives two across and seven rows, which is fourteen per sheet.

Sheets and spare space

When you enter the total number of labels, the page divides it by the number per sheet and rounds up. The last sheet is almost always partial, and the “Empty on the last sheet” row shows how much space stays free. It is not an error or waste, just a hint: it is often cheaper to print a few spare labels than to print a separate sheet later.

Not a print-ready file

The page does not draw a PDF and does not know your printer. It gives you text and sizes: copy the lines into an editor, set the table cell size to match the card and print. Cut exactly at these sizes – the calculation leaves no gaps between labels.

Common questions about the label generator

Why do fewer labels fit on a sheet than I counted?

Because the count uses whole labels and 5 mm margins. Printers can rarely print to the very edge of the sheet, so the strip around the edge is left out.

Can I set my own margin?

No. The margin is fixed at 5 mm on every side. If your printer prints closer to the edge, make the label a little smaller and you get the same result.

What should go in the extra line?

Whatever you will be looking for in three months: the weight, a use-by date, the box number, the room, the price. The page does not check or change this line.

Is this suitable for product labels in a shop?

For your own records, yes. For product labelling required by law, no: mandatory labelling details are not checked or filled in here.

Will the label survive a page reload?

Yes, in the same tab: the fields come back and the label is built from them again. Close the tab and everything is gone, so copy the finished text.
